Thanks for stopping by...

Welcome to the world of Shawn and Octoberson Design!

I'm a graphic designer who's finally starting to branch out into other areas of art and interests. I've been a graphic designer/production manager/graphic/production director for a local magazine. While I like designing ads and helping to produce a magazine every month, I also love to draw.

My hope for this blog is to post all sorts of new things that I've created, from sketches to finished works. I want to put my name and my work out into cyberspace, maybe it will end up making more creations to put into my digital portfolio! Please feel free to contact me if my design skills could be of use to you.

Creating a logo... the sequel

Today has been a better day than yesterday when it comes to the logo work. I managed to sneak in some time this morning to update and revise my options and even added a splash of color so it's not so stark and "halloween" with my color scheme. There's one version I know I like at the moment, but I'm looking forward to seeing how my next critique goes. I should be able to do more with it later tonight or early tomorrow.

The past couple of weeks took me back a decade to feeling like I was back in art school all over again. Honestly, I don't mind that at all. Back in school I used to have a decent amount of time to tweak and refine my projects until they were decent enough to show off and be proud of (most of the time). Today in the deadline oriented market of publishing, I'm lucky for an hour or two sometimes to be able to pull off a good design. It's one thing to design something for someone else, though. Designing for yourself is a whole new animal if you're a designer.

I know my fellow co-worker and partner-in-crime, Derek, can agree with me on that one. He's also in the same boat as me in trying to refine his own personal logo and trying to branch out into self promoting his own work through his website. There's some point during the day when we'll touch base on how our projects are going. He's farther ahead on his own personal logo but at the moment he's working on business cards for himself. I'm obviously not that far, but I can feel like there's a finish line coming up soon for the logo.

Something that was reinforced in my mentality of design by creating my own logo in the last few weeks is simple is good. As much as what I hoped to be the final version of my logo was positively viewed by almost everyone in general, I do agree that simpler is sometimes the best option. I only wish that I had waited a little longer to refine my logo instead of just putting it out there only to go back to basics on it a week later. But you live and you learn. If I didn't put it out there before, I wouldn't have gotten the chance to have my critique and make the logo better, so I can't complain.

Hopefully very soon the finalized logo will be ready to promote me and then the rest of the work can begin. Keep checking back to see how it all worked out, and feel free to critique. I love getting any and all feedback, for good or bad!
