Thanks for stopping by...

Welcome to the world of Shawn and Octoberson Design!

I'm a graphic designer who's finally starting to branch out into other areas of art and interests. I've been a graphic designer/production manager/graphic/production director for a local magazine. While I like designing ads and helping to produce a magazine every month, I also love to draw.

My hope for this blog is to post all sorts of new things that I've created, from sketches to finished works. I want to put my name and my work out into cyberspace, maybe it will end up making more creations to put into my digital portfolio! Please feel free to contact me if my design skills could be of use to you.

A Few Quick Updates...

I know the other week I wrote about how sometimes I forget I have a blog. The more I was thinking about it, the more I realized that there's a little more going on in this bald designer's life than I let on. Here's the scoop...

At the moment I'm working on an assignment from a friend to design a team of characters for his creator owned comic book. Here's a link to the myspace page he's set up for the character. About three years ago I helped him create the basic design of Silver Spectre, so it's interesting to go back into his world and try to come up with different takes on what heroes or vigilantes would be like. I'll admit I'm a slow worker on these sorts of projects, mostly because I love to research a lot and get inspired from various things, either through what my friend gives me as his ideas for the character, or by my off the cuff ideas. Still, once they're finished I'll be sure to post them on here. Plus, I've been incredibly overdue in drawing up a sketch of Spectre himself as a little portfolio piece to show off something I've helped design that's actually being published. Yes, I am a slacker.

Another project that I'm working on is the next birthday present for my lovely, creative, talented girlfriend, Anne. So far I've managed to design two pieces of art for her, both for her 24th birthday (the Artemis piece I highlighted when I first started my blog) and the Tattoo piece to commemorate the first short story she ever let me read when we first started dating, not to mention one of the short stories that made it into her Growing Up Girl short story collection that was published last year. Her birthday's coming up soon, so I'm trying to get ideas for something fun and creative. At the moment I do have one idea that I'm hoping to run with, so we'll see how that goes. The best news is, I'll post whatever it is that I manage to do for her on my blog to share with anyone interested. Stay tuned!

The next project I'm juggling (horribly I might add) is something near and dear to me. It's not about design or art at all. Instead it's going more in the literary side of things, something that, other than blogs or song writing back in high school, I don't normally try and overstep my boundries in doing. For the sake of the idea and the sake of how slowly I seem to be able to work on it, I won't say too much here. If I had to boil down the idea into something incredibly basic to help others understand what I'm tinkering with, let's just say it's a story about super hero wish fulfillment. This is an idea that won't die, since I've been tinkering with it for about two years already. Thanks to a friend of mine, I've managed to roughly flesh out a progression of story that goes well beyond one novel, so I'd hope to be able to do what I can to make it a series of some sort, in the way of The Dresden Files or Harry Potter. For right now, I'm trying to keep myself focused on the beginning and what I need to do to get this idea moving forward, trying to focus on making the characters interesting and likable enough that you'd want to sit down with them again and again and see what other adventures they'd get into.

On a personal note things have started changing a bit more in my normal life. Yesterday I had the day off from work so I decided to start shopping around for apartments. So far one of the three I took a look at stands out from the rest (mostly because the third apartment was too expensive for what I can afford, but I wanted to see it anyway just out of curiosity's sake). Anne went with me and was a very good advisor for reminding me to keep checking around and not fall in love with the first place I visit (something that's happened to me with my apartment at the moment over six years ago, as well as the first real car I bought for myself over 10 years back). Still, yesterday we both agreed that it's exciting to see that change has finally come to my life in a good way. I'm looking forward to having more space to work on things and keep my art table separate from my computer (which currently is the only place in my room I have a space to keep both, unfortunately not a good idea on helping me want to draw).

With enough things to keep me busy at night apart from my normal gig at the magazine, I'm feeling very positive and very nervous about all the change coming. I have a feeling this time next year I'll look back at all of this and laugh because it all will work out in the end. Still, I have to get things moving forward and keep these changes coming! Until next time...
